Finding the right fit — the first time.

Ring sizing matters more than most people realise. This guide covers how to measure accurately, how European sizing works, and what to do if you are unsure.

A ring that fits perfectly is one you forget you are wearing. A ring that does not fit is one you think about constantly — and not in the way you intended.

At 88Facets.com we use the European (ISO) sizing standard — a system based on the inner circumference of the ring in millimetres. It is the most precise sizing system in use, and the one that translates most directly into the measurements our craftspeople work with during production.

Two reliable methods

01
The string or paper method
Cut a thin strip of paper approximately 10 cm long. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you intend to wear the ring on — snug, but not tight. Mark where the paper overlaps with a pen. Lay it flat against a ruler and measure the length in millimetres. This measurement is your inner circumference, which corresponds directly to the European ring size.
Measure at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest. Repeat two or three times and take the average.
02
Measure an existing ring
If you own a ring that fits the correct finger well, measure its inner diameter using a ruler — place the ruler across the widest interior point. Multiply this diameter (in mm) by π (3.1416) to calculate the inner circumference. For example: a ring with an inner diameter of 17.2 mm has a circumference of approximately 54 mm, which corresponds to European size 54.
Photograph the ring next to a ruler if you are ordering remotely — we can help you interpret the measurement.

Inner circumference to ring size

European ring sizes correspond directly to the inner circumference in millimetres. The most commonly worn sizes for women fall between 48 and 56; for men, between 58 and 68. Highlighted rows are the most frequently ordered sizes.

Highlighted rows indicate the most commonly ordered sizes for women's engagement rings. Wide-band rings (>6 mm) should be ordered half a size larger than your measured size.

What affects the fit

Time of day
Fingers are largest in the evening. Always measure in the afternoon or evening — never first thing in the morning.
Temperature
Cold temperatures cause fingers to contract; warmth causes them to expand. Measure at a comfortable room temperature.
Dominant hand
The ring finger on the dominant hand is typically half a size larger. If the ring is for the right hand, measure the right hand.
Band width
Wide bands sit higher on the finger and fit more snugly. Rings wider than 6 mm should be ordered half a size larger than your measured size.
Knuckle size
If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, size to the knuckle. A ring sized to the base may not pass over the knuckle at all.
When in doubt
Size up, not down. A slightly large ring can be resized. Our first-year free resizing exists precisely for this situation.
"If you are buying a surprise ring, choose a size between 52 and 54 — this is where the majority of women's engagement ring sizes fall. We resize the first time for free."

The surprise proposal — a practical guide

The most reliable method is to borrow a ring your partner wears on the ring finger of the left hand — even briefly. Bring it to your consultation or trace its inner diameter on paper. If that is not possible, ask a close friend or family member who may know the size.

If none of these options are available, order in a size 52 or 53 for women, or size 62 for men. These are the statistical midpoints for each. Our first-year free resizing means the ring can be adjusted after the proposal — a conversation most couples find natural and enjoyable.
